Common Scams in Pakse & Champasak

Southern Laos is generally safe, but a few small tricks are worth knowing — from "per person" turning into "per vehicle" to rental-bike damage claims.

Updated October 18, 2026

1. "Per person" becomes "per vehicle"

You agree a price at the bus terminal, then at the destination the driver says it was per person. Ask clearly before boarding and use the Driver Card.

2. "The bus station is closed / no more buses"

Some tuk-tuk drivers claim there are no buses left so they can take you to their own agent or sell an expensive taxi charter. Check with your hotel or the routes pages on this site.

3. "VIP" tickets that aren't VIP

A bus sold as VIP may be an ordinary bus, or you may be moved to another vehicle on the way. Buy from companies with a real office and ask for a ticket stating the bus type.

4. 4,000 Islands tickets without the boat

You arrive in Nakasang and are asked to pay again for the boat, or dropped at the wrong island. Make sure the ticket says "boat to Don Det / Don Khon included".

5. Rental motorbike damage claims

The shop says the bike was scratched when you return it. Take photos and a video all around the bike before you ride off. Avoid leaving your passport — leave a cash deposit instead — and always use the shop's lock.

6. "Visa helpers" at the border

At Vang Tao and Nong Nok Khiene people may offer to fill in forms for a fee. You can do it yourself — and always ask for a receipt for any fee.

7. Currency confusion

"Fifty" — kip or baht? Always state the full figure, e.g. "50,000 kip".
