Pakse Mekong Riverside

Overview

About this place

The Mekong promenade in central Pakse — ideal for an evening stroll, sunset views, street-food stalls and the meeting point of the Sedone and Mekong rivers.

The Pakse Mekong riverside is the promenade along the Mekong in the town centre, close to where the Sedone River joins the Mekong — the origin of the name "Pakse" (mouth of the Se). In the evening, locals come out to stroll, jog, join open-air aerobics or simply sit in the breeze by the water; it is relaxed, friendly and a great window onto everyday Pakse life.

As the heat eases, food and drink stalls set up: grilled meats, papaya salad, Lao sausage, fresh fruit and smoothies. The night food market and several riverside restaurants and bars are close by, so you can sit down to Lao food while watching the last light of the day. The sun sets behind the hills on the west bank, with the golden Buddha of Wat Phou Salao and the Lao–Japanese Friendship Bridge visible in the distance.

The riverside connects easily on foot with Wat Luang and the riverside hotel area. Around the end of Buddhist Lent (about October) and Lao New Year (April), the riverbanks are especially lively, with boat races, illuminated boat floats and festivities.

Tips: come between 17:00 and 19:00 for the sunset, then stay on for dinner. Bring mosquito repellent and ask prices before ordering where nothing is posted. In the rainy season (roughly July–September) the river runs high and fast — stay away from slippery or unfenced banks.

Opening hours, fees and fares are sample data — please verify before visiting.

A real hidden gem — far fewer crowds than the big sights in Thailand or Cambodia.
